Margano, a 2-year-old full brother to the ill-fated 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, broke his maiden in today’s seventh race at Gulfstream Park, at 1 1/16 miles on turf.
It was Margano’s third start. He finished seventh and then second in turf maiden races at Belmont. He’s trained by Barclay Tagg, with owner Lael Stables parting company earlier this year with Michael Matz, the man who developed and trained Barbaro, who also started out on grass.
Javier Castellano was aboard Margano for his 1 1/4 -length victory after closing from mid-pack in the field of 12.
